Crown & Bridge
- Crown & Bridge restorations are used for a variety of clinical situations including:
- Replacement of lost or missing tooth structure (broken or fractured teeth)
- Protect a tooth after root canal therapy
- Change or improve the aesthetics of front teeth
- Protect structurally weakened, heavily restored or cracked teeth
- Crowns are generally a two appointment procedure. At the first appointment we replace/remove any current fillings, prepare/shape the tooth, take an impression, and fabricate a provisional restoration to be worn while our dental lab fabricates the final restoration. At the second appointment, we swap the provisional for the final restoration.
FAQs
Will my new crown match my existing teeth?
We endeavor to match the shape, colour and aesthetics of your existing teeth as best we can. Our dental lab has tremendous experience in creating beautiful, functional restorations.
However, if your teeth are very dark, stained or have prominent white spots, we may not be able to achieve a perfect match. Multiple appointments/trials may be necessary
Will my tooth be weaker if you have to shave it down?
When we prepare your tooth for a crown, we only remove enough tooth to make room for the crown material. In most cases, a crown will help to strengthen and protect the tooth underneath.
What will my new crown be made from?
Dental crowns are made from a variety of material such as porcelain, zirconia and gold. The material of choice depends of what we are trying to achieve with the crown. Back teeth need high strength to resist chewing forces and often use zirconia or gold. Front teeth are often more aesthetically driver and benefit from porcelains.
How long will my crown last for?
Crowns can last for many years if they are taken care of. The most common reason for crown failure is recurrent decay underneath the crown margin from plaque or food build-up. Daily brushing and flossing are a must, as are regular check-ups and radiographs.
